Biography:

Nilgün Doğrusöz was born in 1967, in Izmir, Turkey. In 1989, she graduated from the Ege University Turkish Music State Conservatory in Izmir. Doğrusöz later lectured music at the Turkish Music State Conservatory of Gaziantep University before receiving a master’s degree in music (1993) from the Institute of Social Sciences at Istanbul Technical University (ITU). In 1998, she became an assistant professor atthe Musicology Department of the Turkish Music State Conservatory (ITU), and in 2000 studied at New England Conservatory of Music (Boston, US). In 2001, Doğrusöz worked as a visiting scholar lecturing Ottoman/Turkish music at Harvard University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES), while at the same time working as the director of the Middle Eastern Music Study Group, which concerned the performance of Ottoman/Turkish music with interested persons. Doğrusöz additionally cataloged Turkish music collections the Loeb Music Library in Harvard University, which included musical scores, books, and recordings. In 2001, she studied Arabic music theory and vocal music with a scholarship from the Arab American Arts Institute at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA. Doğrusöz has received a proficiency in art (1997) degree and PhD (2008) from Istanbul Technical University. Currently she is a Professor at the Music Theory Department of the Turkish Music Conservatory at ITU, where she teaches music paleography, history, and theory of Turkish music. In 2014, Doğrusöz founded the ITU Ottoman-Turkish Music Research Group (OTMAG). Together with her group, she worked on private archives of Ali Rifat Çağatay, Rauf Yekta Bey and Dürrü Turan, the leading musical figures of the 20th century. OTMAG aims to create its own historiography ecole by involving to national and international platform through written/oral presentations and projects, by collaborating with other disciplines that are based on historical musicology (e.g. literature, history, political science, sociology, etc). Doğrusöz is additionally one of the founders of Avaze and Edvar ensembles and performed as a vocal and kemençe (Turkish fiddle) player. Doğrusöz currently serves as an advisor at the European Union Research Project of the Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae Center at the University of Munster, Germany.

Publications: In 2008 Nilgün Doğrusöz (in cooperation with Cem Ünver) has translated a book written by Virgina Danielson, titled Ümmü Gülsüm, Arap Şarkısı ve Yirminci Yüzyılda Mısır Toplumu. She is also the author of four books on Ottoman/Turkish Music: Abdülbaki Nasır Dede’nin Müzik Yazısı “Tahririye”, (cowriter Recep Uslu) (2009); Musiki Risaleleri, İstanbul 2012; Yusuf Kırşehri’nin Müzik Teorisi, (2012); Itri İzleri, (cowriters Ali Tan&Recep Uslu) (2012). Musikinin Asri Prensi: Ali Rifat Çağatay, (2017) and Rauf Yekta Bey'in Musiki Antikaları, (2018) are published in cooperation with OTMAG research group.
