Program Introduction / Intention: Musicology and Music Theory PHD programme has been founded in 2002-2003 Academic year in Social Sciences Institute in the name of Musicology and Music Theory. Starting with Musicology and Music Theory PHD programme education, Musicology master programme in 2011, and Muic Theory Composition master programme has welcomed their first students.
Music theory and Musicology PhD programme aims to transmit scentific knowledge to new generations and to educate canditates of social sciences and musicians.

Job Opportunities for Graduate Students: Musicology master degree graduate students can be researcher, academician, music critic, or producer.

Possible Candidates: Besides the graduate students from musicology and ethnomusicology programmes, music performance or social sciences students are also very welcomed to this department. Other fields as sociology, anthropology, politics, philosophy, physics, mathematics are also welcomed.

• English language certificate
• A letter explaining master thesis results (minimum 1000 words)
• Letter of intend (minimum 1000 words)
• 2 reference letters (to be handed in the oral interview)

Musicology has a large scope of research as collecting data and evaluating them with scientific methods. Not only with musical experiences and values, but also expanding them in the society by using scientific disciplines.
Musicology has many subfields as historical musicology, systematical musicology, folklore, ethnomusicology and popular music. Besides, it has gained its identity by the interdisciplinary studies. It has close realtionship with other sciences as sociology, anthropology, politics, philosophy, physics, mathematics. Related to these interactions, the aim focuses on giving meaing to music for the society.

Graduates' Areas of Study:
Graduates of musicology graduate program, as well as music scientists, research, academics, education, music writing, music criticism, program production, can do consulting.

Target Audience: Due to the diversity and wide scope of the study areas, students who graduated from musicology and ethnomusicology undergraduate programs, music performance or graduates of social sciences are also included in the target group of musicology program. The academic field of many disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, political science, linguistics, psychology, philosophy, physics and mathematics is in the target group of musicology.

PROGRAM NAME: MUSIC THEORY COMPOSITION

Program Introduction / Aim: Department of Musicology and Music Theory Ph.D. Program in Musicology and Music Theory was opened at the Institute of Social Sciences in the academic year of 2002-2003, and the Ph.D. Program in Musicology and Music Theory first began. Musicology Master's Program in 2011, Music Theory Composition Program in 2013, received its first students.
Music Theory is an area based on analyzing musical structures, creating new theories and evaluating them in a systematic way through scientific methods. The composition aims to produce original works and to reveal different sound realms. Historical and current theoretical knowledge in composition plays an important role in the interpretation of the available data and in the process of creativity. Music Theory and Composition master program within the body of ITU SBE aims to educate national and international prominent individuals who will specialize in both music theory and composition. 

Graduates' Fields of Study: Within the academic and artistic institutions (Universities, Institutes, Ministry of Culture, TSM-THM, State Theaters, State Opera and Ballet, Presidency and City Orchestras, Scientific Certificate Programs in Various Organizations etc.) and cinema within the independent music sector. , theater, dance etc. serve as qualified and respected experts in national and international fields.

Target Audience: People who are interested in music in the intellectual sense, to investigate the structural elements of music and the effects of these elements on music and listeners as well as those who want to expand the composition horizon with new techniques are included in the target audience of Music Theory and Composition Master Program.
